Our Impact, with Your Help:

- Bundle of Joy is now a full scale clearinghouse for diapers–moving tens of thousands of diapers through our warehouse to 25 distribution sites around the cities and suburbs.

- Bundle of Joy has grown into a grass roots movement of families helping families. We have collected thousands of unused diapers from families, sorted, counted, repackaged and redistributed them. We’ve done it all with parent (and grandparent) donors and volunteers–without any paid staff.

- Bundle of Joy is part of the National Diaper Bank Network, a national coalition that is working to establish best practices for diaper banks and meet its goal of distributing 20 million diapers nationwide each year for the next three years.

- As part of the NDBN, Bundle of Joy and others are seeking to enact federal legislation to make diapers more readily available to children in daycare, and increase awareness about this important health issue.

The Continuing Need for Diapers:

- Diapers provide dignity. Bundle of Joy provided pull-up training pants to a teacher who had a disabled five-year-old boy in her class who was unable to potty train. The little boy was able to continue attending school, without the embarrassment of wet pants in front of his peers.

- Diapers provide peace of mind. Bundle of Joy provides diapers to parents with cancer and other unforeseen medical conditions that make them unable to work. We also supply diapers to a respite care facility that cares for severely disabled babies and children when their parents need a break. We have heard first hand the peace of mind these parents experience knowing that their children’s basic health needs are being met.

- Diaper deserts exist in Chicago. Forced to rely on convenience stores, Chicago’s poorest families pay the most for diapers–in some instances as much as $.25 per diaper more than families who live in neighborhoods with large retailers and more buying options.

- The demand for affordable diapers persists. Articles in the Wall Street Journal and New York Times underscore that it is not only tough economic times and high unemployment that render families unable to afford diapers. For example, the NDBN has been called upon to provide diapers to families impacted by the recent string of tornadoes.

We’ve come a long way, but we’re not done until every child in Chicagoland has access to diapers. So keep the diapers coming!

This holiday season Bundle of Joy is committed to giving every baby in Chicago a happy and healthy start to the new year.  Last year during the holiday season we received enough generous donations for 100,000 diapers.  This year, we have set the ambitious goal of 150,000 diapers!  Keep in mind that Bundle of Joy does not keep an on-going inventory of diapers.  The one thing we’ve realized with our growing base of supporters that have provided us with an amazing supply of diapers, is that no matter how many diapers we have, there will always be a need for them!  The donations we receive are regularly used to supply our expanding network of agencies that support families, new moms, and teen moms.  They welcome every single diaper we can offer them.  Diapers are the #1 requested item at Chicago’s food banks and are not included in federal aid programs like food stamps (Link) or Women, Infants, Children (WIC).
